What a skin fade actually is

A skin fade blends from bare skin at the bottom up into the length on top, with no visible step anywhere in the transition. The bottom section is taken to skin with a razor or foil shaver rather than a clipper, which is what separates it from a zero fade.

The work is in the blend. Anyone can take hair off; making the gradient invisible so it looks like one continuous shape is the part that takes time and a steady hand. That is why a skin fade takes longer than a standard cut.

You choose how high the fade sits. Low sits just above the ear, mid runs at temple height, and high takes the skin well up the side for the most dramatic contrast.

What it works with

Straight and fine hair — shows the blend most clearly, so a clean fade looks exceptional. It also shows any imperfection, which is why it needs care.
Thick, coarse hair — holds a fade beautifully and gives strong contrast with the length on top.
Curly and textured hair — works very well, and the contrast between skin and curl is one of the best looks going. The blend needs to be worked with the curl pattern rather than against it.
Thinning hair or a receding hairline — a fade can be genuinely flattering here, because it removes the contrast that draws the eye to a thin area. Talk to us about fade height.
Scars, moles or an uneven scalp — worth mentioning before we start, since taking to skin makes everything visible. We can adjust the height.

Keeping it sharp

A skin fade looks its best for about one to two weeks. That is the honest answer. The skin section is the first thing to grow out, and once there is stubble at the bottom the gradient stops reading as a fade.

Most clients who want it consistently sharp come back every two to three weeks.
If you want longer between visits, a low fade or a taper holds its shape better than a high skin fade.
Do not try to touch up the skin section yourself before an event. It is the easiest thing in the world to get wrong and very hard to fix.
Keep the scalp moisturised if it gets dry or flaky after being taken to skin, especially in summer.
