What a skin fade actually is

A skin fade blends from bare skin at the bottom up into the length on top, with no visible step anywhere in the transition. The bottom section is taken to skin with a razor or foil shaver rather than a clipper, which is what separates it from a zero fade.

The work is in the blend. Anyone can take hair off; making the gradient invisible so it looks like one continuous shape is the part that takes time and a steady hand. That is why a skin fade takes longer than a standard cut.

You choose how high the fade sits. Low sits just above the ear, mid runs at temple height, and high takes the skin well up the side for the most dramatic contrast.

Which fade height suits you

FadeWhere it sitsBest for
Low skin fadeJust above the ear, following the hairlineConservative workplaces, a subtle look, or a first skin fade
Mid skin fadeAround temple heightThe safest all-rounder — sharp without being extreme, suits most head shapes
High skin fadeWell up the side, near the parietal ridgeMaximum contrast and a bold look; strongest with plenty of length on top
Burst fadeFades in an arc around the ear, leaving the back longerMullets, taper-back styles and textured looks

If you are not sure, say so at the chair. We would rather spend two minutes working it out with you than guess and have you sit there regretting it.

What it works with

Keeping it sharp

A skin fade looks its best for about one to two weeks. That is the honest answer. The skin section is the first thing to grow out, and once there is stubble at the bottom the gradient stops reading as a fade.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a skin fade cost in Kiara?

A skin fade is $40 at Barberz Den, or $60 combined with a beard trim and line-up. A zero fade is $35 if you want something slightly less severe.

What is the difference between a zero fade and a skin fade?

A zero fade uses a zero-guard clipper, leaving the shortest clipper length but still a trace of hair. A skin fade goes further, blending to bare skin with a razor or foil shaver. The skin fade is sharper and grows out faster.

How long does a skin fade take?

Usually around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on how much length is coming off and how detailed the blend is. Add a beard trim and it runs closer to an hour.

How often should I get a skin fade maintained?

It looks its sharpest for about one to two weeks, so most clients come back every two to three weeks. A low fade or taper holds its shape a little longer.

Will a skin fade suit thinning hair?

Often yes — a fade removes the contrast that draws attention to a thinner area, which many people find more flattering than trying to cover it. Talk to us about fade height before we start.
