What a traditional shave involves

• Hot towels first. Heat and moisture soften the hair and open the pores, which is what allows a genuinely close shave without dragging.
• Pre-shave oil to protect the skin and help the blade glide.
• Lather worked in properly, brushed rather than squirted, which lifts the hair away from the face.
• The shave itself — with the grain first, then refined, working in sections and re-lathering as needed.
• A cool towel to finish, closing the pores, followed by a balm.

It takes around 20 to 30 minutes and it is not something to rush. Most of the value is in the preparation.

Pricing

Note this is a different service to our Face Scrub & Hot Towel treatment, which is $30. That one is a facial treatment with a hot-towel finish — relaxing, but it is not a shave. If you want the straight-razor shave, ask for it by name.

Who it suits, and who should skip it

Worth booking if you want the closest shave available, you are getting ready for an event, you have never had a proper barber shave, or you simply want twenty minutes of doing nothing.

Tell us first, or give it a miss, if you have:

• Active acne, broken skin, cold sores or any open lesion in the area
• A skin condition currently flaring — eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis
• Recently had a chemical peel, laser treatment or strong retinoid use
• A history of significant ingrown hairs or razor bumps, which a very close shave can aggravate — worth discussing before booking
• Moles or raised marks in the shave area, so we can work around them

None of this is us being difficult. A straight razor takes the hair off at skin level, and skin that is already compromised does not enjoy that.

Afterwards

• Leave the skin alone for a few hours — no harsh products, no strong aftershave with high alcohol content if you are prone to irritation.
• Sunscreen if you are heading outside. Freshly shaved skin burns more easily.
• A little redness for an hour or so is normal, especially the first time.
• If you get ingrown hairs, a gentle exfoliation a day or two later helps more than doing it immediately.

What to expect when you book

• Walk in or book ahead. Walk-ins are welcome every day. Booking just means you are not waiting for a chair, which is worth doing on weekends and late afternoons.
• Where we are. Shop 4/68 Aussat Drive, Kiara WA 6054, at Kiara Shopping Centre, with free parking on site.
• When we are open. Mon–Fri 9am–6pm · Sat–Sun 9am–5pm — seven days.
• Payment. Cash, EFTPOS and card.
• Bring a photo. Genuinely the single most useful thing you can do. A reference picture settles more than any description.
